Just picked a 28 lb watermelon the other day (been babying it along since the December freezes here in FL.) Wasn't totally ripe, but still tastes good. Fair year for cukes, but squash = zip (due to the stupid borers. Whoever makes a bait for those will be rich.) Watching the pineapples (as are the raccoons.) Not much of anything else, due to all the rain this year. I'd never make it as a farmer....

Lots of folks think any flying, stinging thing is a bee.
Totally wrong. Bees help plants, wasps don't.
Bees die when they sting you, trying to protect their place.
Their butt falls off and stays in you.

Wasps, such as yellow jackets can sting you many times.
They can also bite.

Please don't kill bees.

Feel free to knock the snot out of yellow jacket wasps.

If I can love bees (and I do - including doing a little 'hiving'), anyone can. They are --- fascinating.

I have absolutely NO problem telling the difference. They all sting - some worse tempered than others.

But - I am highly allergic to yellow jackets. (never had a reaction to a honey bee or even a bumblebee-yet). So allergic that I carry an Epipen where ever I go. (if something that is flying stings - it looks for me).

I know EXACTLY what is flying at me - its always the darned things I'm allergic to

I snapped a couple of pictures from the house (looks down on the garden).

Like I said, mine is not so neat and clean. However, we got our first fully ripe tomatoes and watermelons (see pic) and we have already put up peas, broccoli and cauliflower (three for peas, and now the second round for the broccoli and cauliflower), and the first 2 of green and yellow wax beans.

Of course, the cherries are not bearing yet (2 years old) and the blackberries (also 2) had a minor crop. The grasshoppers tried to kill the grapes, but did not succeed - they have finally put another crop of leaves back on. Snow peas and the next crop of radishes will go in the second week of August for the last crop planting of the year (hopefully).

And, of course, we are now giving away squash and zucchini. The pumpkins, hopefully, will not be devoured by grasshoppers before they are ready in a month or so. (fingers crossed)

you guys were right
I set out 20 saucers of beer Sunday nite.
Monday morning there were DEAD slugs in 19 of them
I emptied them and refilled; and when I checked them after supper, they were full again!
me thinks my old man is gonna go thirsty

Glad I was able to help, I am sure there is other methods, but this is one safe way to protect you and the plants with no chemicals.

This is one from the 15 or so bushels we got off just one of our apple trees this year. About 1/3 of them were this size......

My garden has pennies, nickels, dimes and quarters and a half dollar, all planted at six inches. Also a few junque targets just for fun. Monty

Here in Illinois, just planted my Allium
Sativum for next year; have to get them
in now so they don't heave out of the ground,
with the cold weather we have here.
