Re: What's next?

Interesting question Scott. First thought was what you already mentioned....wheat & pre 82 pennies and also pre 60 nickels I guess. I am curious to what others think as well.

Re: What's next?

Silver will be around for a long time, don't forget the little old lady cashing in the departed husbands coin collection, the teens taking the coin stash for who knows what and unfortunately the thief who gets into our homes and steals the coins and spends them for face value.

Re: What's next?

There were over 16 Billion coins minted in the US that have Silver in them. I can only think of one lady from Louisiana who is even getting close to one Billion coins. I can't wait to see her totals for a full year.

I think we will have a few more years of good CRHing but I wouldn't be at all surprised to see signs at banks that say "Sorry, we don't have any half-dollars but have you tried the new gold dollars yet ?" Cheers Jim

Re: What's next?

I think the demise of the half dollar denomination is more likely than the total disapperance of silver. You'd think that after 40 years, and after some spectacular silver spot price jumps, all the silver would have vanished by now. The fact that we're still finding it now is evidence that we'll still be finding silver for decades to come. Of course it will become increasingly rarer to do so, similar to dime and quarter hunting today. Fortunately this is a hobby that rewards patience.

Re: What's next?

Silver had its highest price in the early 80's rising to $48 an ounce. Lots of people dug their silver coins out of their hiding spots and cashed them in. ( Not me !!)

They were selling their old silverware, silver trays, antiques and other silver items that had been passed down from previous generations. :(

Lots of silver items, and coins were melted and made into silver bars, that were selling fast.

Even after the change from silver coins to clad, in 1965, there was lots of people taking all the silver coins they could find in their change ,out of circulation to keep. ( My brother and I did this, and CRH in the late 60's and early 70's)

I work in a retail store where occasionally I get to get some silver coins, and older pennies and nickels.

Are there old coins still to be found???

Look at all the older coins these people on this CRH forum are finding!!!!!! 8) 8)
( I don't do much CRH, but it IS very cool to read and see all the goodies everyone still finds!! )
