whats this indian head penny worth?

The other day I dug up 2 indian head pennys, the one was an 1870 and the other was a 1879.. The 1879 is in pretty bad shape even after cleaning with soap & water but the 1870 cleaned up really nice.. I can see 80% of all its markings pretty well considering i lightly cleaned it along with liberty on the head dress.. any guesses what i could get for it??

Most of us don't detect for a profit and are just adding to our collection. Even a zinc penny is a prize but a low one.

Regarding the F-12 or the $225? Aside from the dug/cleaned issue it probably would have graded F-12 although can't really tell from this one picture. Even though the picture isn't the greatest, I can make out LIBERTY which would be a requirement. The price guide DOES list that coin in F-12 as $225. So it may be F-12, but it's dug and cleaned. Therefore, no, it's not going to bring $225, but hardly such an outlandish statement as to publicly make fun of the guy for it.

I was laughing about the $225 part. I used to detect with a guy that thought like that. As soon as we would get back into the car he would be like, I just dug a $450 Indian Head penny and be serious about it. I just had to shake my head...

I am not the last word on value, but first I have to commend you on not useing anything stronger than soap and water to clean this find. NEVER use an abrasive or steel wool, etc. If nothing else, just water and a soft tooth brush.

Now, value. There are two (2) varities, a shall "n" in the word CENT is one variety and then there is the bold "n" in CENT, the second variety. Judging from the condition of this Indian, I would say it is in fine to VF, but since I can't see the reverse of this coin I would shoot a "value" in the middle. The shallow "n" is the more valuable, but not by much. If this Indian has any corrosion or pitting, value would be reduced. If you sell to a dealer, remember he will give you wholesale price. If book is $200 - $250, expect about $150 to $175. The buyer then has to put this coin out and hope to turn it in a short period of time or risk tieing up his or her money.

The Indian is a nice find, but one would be off base to give you a value without seeing the coin in person or at least taking some better jpegs of obverse and reverse and posting here.

Can I ask what type of soil you found these cents and how deep? Can you also tell me where you were searching (not exact spot) like a homestead, park, etc?

I cleaned it with only dish soap and a toothbrush..
