This artifact was found by a friend’s son while mowing grass in what was once a cultivated field. The farm house there dates to the 1820s and was occupied up to a decade ago.

To me it looks like part of a 20” diameter wheel with a wooden handle. Although the bolt attaching the handle is now bent, I believe it was one time straight so the wheel could be turned by hand. Another handle may have been attached as shown. Before posting I looked at pics of old farm machinery, lathes, even coffee grinders and found many with hand cranks – but none were close enough. What do you think it is off of?

Crank wheel for a grist mill possibly.

Everyone has the right idea! The 20" ones were usually shellers, grain grinders etc. Larger ones were usually on two hole shellers, green bone grinders, etc.

All, a BIG thanks for responding! I agree we are on track so will mark as solved. If most of it was there and in better condition - that would narrow the field - maybe even help ID the manufacturer.
