Under worm holes.

So whats the age of his shell holes being drilled for the buttons? Might need to swing the MD in the area.

If you use the link surf provided it gives a great history on them

My grandmother used the blanks for gravel in her grocery store lot.

It would also be interesting in the metal detecting section as people are always finding old buttons and that is a prize of a find. Imagine making your own buttons.

I found the shell buttons that I have while metal detecting

Privies and dumps hold many types.

Yes gator I have found lots of the buttons MDing. Some with brass shanks. I can remember the mussel boats on the Tennesee River unloading at the Paint Rock landing back in the 60s.

Those are a great indicator of a place to metal detect I bet the guys in the relic hunting section of the metal detecting forum would get a kick out of that artifact.
It might even help somebody ID something they never knew the identity of.

Very interesting topic. I have never heard of this industry. Thanks for sharing the story and artifact.

I've never heard of it either but love old buttons and known for buying them at yard sales and flea markets...this is a very interesting topic.
