WHERE DOES FLOOD GOLD GO

I find flood gold in the river coming out of the Great Smoky Mountains after a lot of rain. It seems to be in about a foot deep of gravel and small stones, but after the water subsides in a few days and weeks, it goes away. Has it inched it way deeper towards the bedrock? Even when I dig deeper I don't seem to find it. Has it just simply flowed further downsteam? Any recovery ideas?
