When it comes to shipwrecks its where you find it.
In the 1700s, Dutch VOC treasure ships loaded with chests full of silver and heavily armed with cannon to fight off pirates, often came near the coast of Western Australia. But strong winds and tides could drive them towards the treacherous reefs of the low lying flat and barren Abrolhos Islands, where it is now known that the Batavia (1629) and the Zeewijk (1727) were wrecked.
The 280-tonne, 44-metre long Aagtekerke, constructed in 1724 for the Dutch East India Company (VOC) was the identical sister ship of the Zeewijk. Commanded by Jan Witboon, and with a crew of 200 men, the Aagtekerke left Cape Town for Batavia (Jakarta, Indonesia) on 3 January 1726, never to be seen or heard of again. Did it, too, suffer the same fate as the Batavia and Zeewijk? Here is page of original manuscript detailing the loss. below.
