Looks more like the remains of an old building. Maybe a fort or something like that. I have no idea of its location.

dont know the location, but time frame could be
46 star flag - July 4, 1908 to July 3, 1912
though a lot of time folks didnt update to current
flag right away, sometimes by a year or 2

I agree it looks more like a building being restored or built.
Sorry.. Can't help on a time or place.

I'm guessing it is a church. Note the flag on the podium with the American Flag. That was first used in 1907 and represents the "Christian" faith. I recall those in our [Methodist] church in the 1960's

46 stars on the US flag - 1908 to 1912. Narrows it down pretty well for time period.

I agree with Charlie. It looks like a church being built and the elders are having a service there.

My church built a new building just a few years ago. There were MANY services on the land and around the building during construction.

For insurance reasons, they wouldn't allow anyone but construction workers inside until the building was 100% complete.

Where did you get the picture? I don't suppose there is anything on the back to give us another clue.

Hurlock Bros Company Mfg. mounting board. I was hoping to see the back of the photo itself...

In what town or county was the yard sale?

Well the board used for mounting isn’t contemporary with the flag in the photograph. Hurlock Brothers were using that “Royal Crest” trademark from 1901 onwards; but, since it says “registered” underneath, then the board must have been produced after the registration date, which was 18th September 1917 (and continuously renewed until 1977, expiring 20 years later).

That metal tripod appears to have a large block of masonry hanging from a winch with chains. Surely that's going to be a foundation stone for whatever is being constructed. If you look for period pictures of new buildings being dedicated, that winch arrangement is commonly seen with the foundation stone being lowered from it.

I occurs to me that there are a lot of stars and stripes on the platform for this to be a church function. Maybe the picture is about the people not the place.

Campaign speech?

I have seen this picture b4 and pretty sure it was a campaign/politicians speech.
Thats what I remember reading about it. I think.

I don't think that subject is black. His hands can be seen in his lap and they are white. I think it was just a result of his head being shaded by the surrounding wood work.

I can't tell if the gentleman is black or not, but I am not seeing his hands in the photo. Unless that right hand I see is growing out of the left side of his chest.

EDIT: Fixed where and which hand were protruding from the black or shadowed man's chest.

I also thought it was a shadow at first. On closer examination, I believe he is a black man. That simple fact, coupled with the Christian flag on the platform, lead me back to the "church dedication" possibility. The men may be local pastors. Nobleboro has a black congregational church in town at that was there at the time (founded 1873). The man seated behind the black man MAY be wearing a clerical collar. Hard to tell because most of his face is obscured by a piece of wood.

I've tried to look at all the churches in Nobleboro and the surrounding county. There's no question the architectural style is Gothic Revival. Sadly, Gothic Revival churches are more the norm than the exception in New England. I haven't found a match. Though several Episcopal and Catholic stone churches I saw have a similar layout. Many of the buildings from that era are gone today.

There is a large tripod front-and-center that appears to have a ceremonial block attached to the chain.
Maybe they are setting (or resetting) the cornerstone for an important building.

I'll venture a train station, simply for the fact that they everyone in the photo appears to be on an upper landing (as if there's at least one story below them??)

Doesn't really address or explain what appears to be a higher elevation arch in the background, though.

A mystery!
