Where's the copper?

[No gold in NY]

This was my last roll of pennies and I pulled out this one.


They look the same, but on the flip side.


The copper is missing. The all copper one weighs 2.53g while the zinc one is 2.48g.
It's just the back side. The rim is copper.

Any ideas? Thanks.

Time to buy more pennies!

maybe contamination on the reverse preventing plating adhesion?? what say Enamel---- OR--- the Long Lost HUNTSMAN---- why fake an error, then put it in circulation--- that would be a schiff-ty move

Proceed with caution. All cents I have seen with similar characteristics were the result of chemistry experiments in middle and high school. I can not say with absolute confidence that this is the case with your coin, but I can say with absolutely no doubt that a few pictures posted to online forums will not get you a definitive answer in this case. Take it to a few professionals. Get their opinions.

Probably set in something acidic that removed the plating. Definitely didn't happen at the mint.
