which pulse detector do you think is best for california's wet sand and shallow water

Hi guys been a while since I last posted. I am considering getting a pulse detector to hunt the shallow waters and wet sands at southern California beaches. I have a Sovereign and it is great for the wet sand but I almost dropped it twice last year and decided to get a pulse machine. I can only spend around six to seven hundred dollars. I am open to suggestions on which pi metal detector you would recommend. thanks in advance and happy hunting.

Hi thadious. If you're satisfied with your sovereign, and are only asking for purposes of getting something water-proof, then another alternative to look at is getting a water-proof standard (ie.: not a pulse) machine. There's several dunkable regular discriminator machines you can buy. But I suppose, if nails are not an issue on your beaches, then .... sure, there's several waterproof beach pulses to choose from as well.

I'm also new to salt water detecting so my opinion is probably not as valuable as more experienced folks. I researched PI detectors for a while before deciding on Garrett's Sea Hunter Mark II and I will share this with you. I considered Tesoro's Sand Shark as well. They were both in the $600 range. I liked the Sea Hunters ability to change coils and headphones as well as a separated battery compartment. I got a good deal and service from Bart of Big Boys Hobbies (Thanks Bart).

The Sea Hunter is a rugged unit, well built and a bit heavier than the Sand Shark, but I'm only using it in a waist-mount configuration. I have also ordered a padded polyester tool belt ($15) for use in place if the supplied Garrett polyester strap.

I like the tones of the machine and it's ability to pinpoint a target.

Our beaches are a bit milder here in SW Florida than the California coast beaches, in that our sand is not as mineralized. PI machines work great here as our wet sand and surf beaches are not as trashy as some spots. We have sugar sand. A VLF machine might go crazy in your mineralized sand but a PI may prove more effective. Just invest in a good solid scoop and prepare to dig, dig, dig...

Thadius, I have both the Sand Shark and the Dual Field. For targeting I like the Sand Shark, but I do believe the Dual Field goes deeper. I have found gold with both. The only thing that is bad about a PI is the fact that you dig everything. I use my E-Trac for the dry and wet and for the water I use one of my PIs. HH GFP

Forgot to say that I am in So Cal too. I have hit almost every beach from San Diego to Zuma. That's the bennies of being retired. I do have choice beaches that I frequent more than others.

Hi guys. thanks for all the responses. I listened to all of your device and then tried an experiment to decide if I really could handle the dig all part of the equation. I switched my soverign to all metal with the purpose of spending an hour or more digging everything that came up. Well after half an hour and more nails, can chatter and aluminum foil than I have ever dug before I gave up and switched back to discrimination mode. I decided to stick with the sovereign and just hunt wet sand from wave line to where dry sand begins. I did end up buying a at pro but not for the beach I just wanted a different detector for parks and one water proof as I have been caught by sprinklers a few times and gotten soaked.. Try to find a used excal 1000. Found mine MINT on craigslist (los Angeles) for 700.00.. Not a scratch.. And nobody wants you on San Diego beaches
