With the Golden µmax I have the standard and cleansweep coils. Whilst using the standard in a park for the first time, it seemed to be a different experience from using the cleansweep. I like the target separation you get with the cleansweep, the standard seems to pick up more than one at a time more often, but it gets great depth.

My next coil will be for searching old coins. What are your opinions? I want the depth, but with target separation. All the areas (parks) I've detected so far have been quiet ground (it appears).

Consider these variables:

[list type=decimal]
Small round concentric:
  • Will a small concentric get better target separation being smaller?
  • Being concentric, will it get just as good depth as a larger DD?
[list type=decimal]
Larger (than standard) round DD:
  • Will a larger DD still have good target separation being larger?
  • Being a larger DD, will it get just as good depth as a standard or smaller concentric?
  • Will it still have good sensitivity for typical small coins?

[list type=decimal]
Here are the ones I'm considering, somewhat in this order:
  • 11" Round Widescan (COIL-11RW-LW)
  • 5¾" Round Concentric(COIL-5.75C-SW; includes scuff)
  • 8½" Round Widescan (COIL-8.5RW-LW)
  • 4" Round Concentric(COIL-4RC-SW)
  • 7" Round Widescan(COIL-7RW-SW)
  • 8" Round Concentric (COIL-RC-SB)

Your detector only needs a sniper coil to get the coins near iron so they won't be masked. A DD coil helps in this, but the small round concentric is what yo need.

Be advised of one thing: If you are using a detector that does not have manual ground balance, Tesoro advises you send in the detector with the new coil you want to use so it can be reset for optimum performance with the new coil.

Changing coils on fixed ground balance machines will cost you some performance if it is not retuned.

Smudge is right. In fact I would say not to waste more money on coils until you swap to a detector with a ground balance control. You will be suprised at the difference it will make to your "cleansweep" because any coil change much bigger or smaller than the stock coil will require internal adjustment to optimise performance.

You could open up the detector and do the adjustment yourself but each swap of coil means another adjustment is needed and the componant soon wears out. Having a G.B. control means all coils are optimised for all soil types so well worth having.

Although sending the unit in to be tuned to the coil is what should be done for best performance, you don't need to do it. Many tesoro users including myself have swapped coils without worrying about it not being GBalanced properly - unless you have some hot ground that is.
Go for the small concentric coil, don't have it myself yet, but hear there is little depth loss over the stock and the target seperation is great.

I have adjusted the ground balance once, it's in a decent position. An 11" DD will probably be good for where the current ground balance is but I'm not sure if I want that coil.

I wouldn't mind having an option to have a ground balance pot installed.

A 5.75 is probably at the top of my list ATM. I wonder if you loose too much depth with the 4"? I might get another Golden and get one of them a GB mod.
