I was searching for a lost gold earring yesterday at a local park that dates back to the early 1900's.....It is has been hunted over and over and over. Well, we never get it all do we? I got a very srong dime hit reading 8 inches and I was thinking maybe a merc?
Well, it was no merc but it was this!
I posted on the What is it forum as well, because of the stamp on the back. It appears to be quite old and the stone is truly amazing

UPDATE........... had the pendant looked at, but I was NOT going to pay $75 for an official appraisal!!! The guy did look at it and said it is a single crystal opal and the stone alone was valued at around 4 hundred Dollars. He could not identify the makers mark either and was pretty puzzled. Of course he wanted to buy it for $200......I THINK NOT!

Re: While searching for lost earring I found this........

GOOD GOD NASH !!!!! You're saying that the stone is almost 3/4" long ??? That doesn't look like an american* opal either; good, old fashoned, solid stone that one is. Seriously that could be worth A LOT of money. The mark does look familiar, I know I've seen it somewhere, my wife and I do alotta antiquing.

*For those who don't know, the difference between an "American"' and true opal, is that an American stone is actually an opal laminate that has been overlaid on a piece of other material(usually glass). True opal stones are worth exponentially more than an American stone.

P.S.- That is also a black opal, Which is typically a much higher quality stone than the traditional stones.

Great find nash......I remember way back, when in Australia they had stones like yours and they were refered to as "fire opals". Ya might be able to ask tinpan if that is what it is.......HH....gregd573

Beautiful opal, Fossis.....................

Re: While searching for lost earring I found this........

That sure is nice Nashoba.

They may get the obvious hits over the years. But alot of the time they still leave a great item behind. I'd take that over a common merc any day.

Re: While searching for lost earring I found this........

I think they call that a fire opal .

Re: While searching for lost earring I found this........

Nope. Fire Opal is almost clear and very red or orange, but the translucent areas in an opal are know as "fire" and the more generally the better. Milky opal is swirly and lacks the brightness. I think that's what they call "light opal" and it's a very, very nice one! ( My Momma likes opals and it's my birthstone - what can I say?)

Great Find!

Nice find, my friend.

I've cut a few opals before, mainly boulder opals ( the kind in ironstone matrix) and have had about a thousand to run through my hands. I'd be willing to bet your stone is definitely what's known as a "doublet", or even "triplet" which refers to a backing process used on stones to stabilize them from their tendency to crack easily.

i've yet to run across a singleSOLID stone set in sterling before. mainly the "b" quality doublets are the ones using in sterling. but hey......still a pretty flashy looking stone......I'd sure as heck be jumpin' if I dug it up.

wanna see my ultimate opal find?????beware.....viewing these pictures may end up sticking you with an expensive hobby/obsession!!!!(i couldn't find the one i saw last year........i think it was about baseball sized an was the most unbelievable thing ever....$50,000+ was the asking price i think, but that was a damn bargain!!!!!
