Who Am I?

I was born on March 17, 1914, near Temple, Texas, and lived there through my first year of high school. My father’s business with the railroad took us to Sweetwater. After graduation, I attended Texas Christian University in Fort Worth on a baseball scholarship, choosing TCU over the University of Texas because TCU allowed him to play both baseball and football (as well as basketball).

I went on to become a collegiate legend playing football for TCU’s Horned Frogs. I signed on with the Washington Redskins in 1937, becoming the highest paid player in the National Football League up to that time. I retired from professional football in 1952 after 16 seasons with the Washington Redskins. Two of my records have yet to be broken. In 1963, I was inducted into the Professional Football Hall of Fame as a charter member. I went on to coach college and pro-football for 16 years before retiring from the sport.

Because of my celebrity status in football, I was approached by Republic Studios about making my own cowboy serial. Filming took place for 6 weeks during the summer of 1941. I was an accomplished horseback rider and did most of my dangerous stunts myself. I also liked calf roping and went on to perform in rodeos.
