Hard to tell. It looks male to me. Defiantly very old.

Sent a photo to button expert William Leigh, and received this reply: "I have not seen this button before. From construction and style, I would certainly think it to be Eighteenth Century. I suppose it to be English made."

I agree, it looks British circa 1790s. No idea on the famous head, but must be someone of that period. Might be a poet, so many options...

This item was tentatively identified by Heritage Auctions as being a brass curtain tie-back with a raised bust of "Jefferson" facing left and was likely issued during Jefferson's term of office as President. It originally had a post in the center of the back. It's value in the condition found is roughly $300.00. Better variations have sold for over $ 500.00 according to the appraiser, who said, "This item shows up occasionally and is not overly valuable. With the noted defect, I would estimate your example around $300. It would not be auction-worthy from our perspective."
