1920s cast iron bookends. Paid $45 at an estate sale, sold on a buy-it-now for $600 3 days after I listed it.

Double Woo Hoo!

Now that's what I call pulled pork!! Great job Paleo Joe!!

Very nice. I remember reading your post looking for a value off of a Worthpoint listing. Did you ever get one or did you just shoot for the stars? Thanks for sharing!

Thanks - I used an old email to create a trial worthpoint account. The last set sold for $600 a year ago, so I priced mine there. Even though one of the pigs has a broken tail, it's rare enough not to matter too much.

Wow...that is a jaw dropper!

I wouldn't have even picked these up at a sale! Nice going!

What makes them so valuable???

Age and rarity I would imagine. I definitely would have picked them up but... the bad thing is I probably wouldn't have shelled out $45 for them myself. I probably would have offered and been willing to take a chance at $20-$25. I would have been unintentionally low balling on that one. Mainly because I haven't had any real luck with antique bookends, cast iron or otherwise in the past.

There are a lot of wealthy alumni and very few items from the dawn of football at the U here. It was the very first 'official' version of the hog.

It was hard to pay $45 for them but there is no bargaining at estate sales here. Full price first day, 25% off second day, 50% off third day. I figured I could make $100 on them so I took a shot. But I thought I might have overpaid all the way home.

I'm glad that rolling the dice paid off for you this time. :occasion14:
