Why all the "drilled" coins?

So I've been seeing more and more videos and pictures of hunters digging up old coins that have a hole drilled in them.
I can see some people making necklaces out of them but I'm noticing now that it's very common and it seems that there might be more of a reason than just jewelry.
Is anyone aware of a reason why this was so common? I did see a post were people once believed that hanging silver around your neck would help a toothache.
Anyone else have 2 cents why it's so common?
Thanks
Nate

They didnt have pockets in there Pantaloons(later to be what we call pants)so they usually kept there coins on a string or in a pouch which was tucked within the waist line.It has been said they were also sewn into cloaks or jackets

Don.........
Yes,I missed that discussion...I dis agree with a lot of what Siegfried posted though and have the self seen experience to stand behind it......#1 being again, they didnt have pockets until later in the 19th century and if you notice many of the holed coins are Pre 1870's.....no Indians here wanted anything to do with money...they even thought gold was worthless and if a white guy seen an Indian with a coin he was sure to figure the Indian stole it and kill him
#3 Chinese coins were very often kept on a string and i have seen several of them come from the ground...never any sword, knife or anything they could be a handle on!

People also sewed coins to their clothes to prevent themselves from losing them.

Just eyed one at the local coin shop, 1850's dollar gold coin, holed, selling for bullion value 90 bucks or so. I say they were used as jewelry, but I really dont know.

Not going to argue that "some" were worn as adornment but I guarantee where we find them there is now ay they were rich enough or cared about how they looked!!
