Why did we move from the crashbox to the flare?

Does anyone know? Some say mercury splatter, and some say clams get blown to smithereens.

maybe it creates a brief slick plate like environment for gold to settle. or......if they don't come up with something "new" they cant justify politely removing an arm and a leg for them. or it's clams

Science & efficiency. The flare actually rests IN the water and allows for a lower sluice. The crashbox is always out of the water.

If you are into a more clay-based material, the crashbox is still preferred as it helps break up any gravel/clay mix.
And the Crashbox is much preferred for gravity dredging.

The material stratifies in the hose. Crashbox blows it all apart again. Flare lets it stay stratified and settle out into the sluice. Plus lowering the output closer to the water.

Strictly to eliminate the smash crash bash that aireated the flow and remixed the gravels after the hose preclassified it for you. A nice clean even flow spreads it all out and no longer a frothing aireated mess. The heavy curtain assists by keeping it laid out,spread out and helps force the fines down to the under current for the absolute best recovery possible. It also had a enviromental aspect as your plume is GREATLY reduced so environutz can't snivel about clay plumes down the creek /river. Two factors yet to be mentioned. The classification issue is the one most often mentioned. But there are two others that actually bear importance. By classifying the material in the hose and keeping it that way, as it enters the sluice, you can SHORTEN the sluice. Additionally there is less lift with a flare than there is with a crash box. All factors are beneficial, and so we see the flare system replacing the crash box. BUT I used a crash box system for many many years and feel they are effective. Just a matter of better technology. It takes less material to build a shorter sluice system and so manufacturer costs may play a role as well.
