So I make a few call this morning to some banks around town to find out who has some halves... $20 here, $3.50 there, $360 here (usually a red flag of a dump when you see that many, but not always). Anyway, I like to hear $40 - $100. For some reason, I usually do the best when I buy about that many from one bank. So I stopped by one bank who told me they had $100 worth. I go inside and the lady says, "Oh, you know what... I actually have $260. $240 in the vault and $20 here. Do you want them all? Some guy just brought them in... He's a collector. He always buys halves and dollars from us." I'm thinking, great... a dump for sure. But I take them all anyway, sure I am gonna get skunked... my feelings were confirmed when she starts laying String rolls on the counter which are still sealed on the ends, but have a slit down the side (just enough to search for silver edges) then taped up - see pic below. Boy, did I want to just tell her I left my wallet at home and I would be right back, so I could get out of buying them. But, I bit the bullet and bought 'em anyway... part of the game. I knew the $240 were skunks (which they were). My only hope was that the other $20 might have something in them. I pour the first roll out in my hand and sure enough, I hear the beautiful clink of silver. 16 of 20 were 40%ers! Sweet. They are all rainbow toned... looks like they may have seen some humidity and so someone just cashed them in for face value. Almost 2.4 ounces of silver for 8 bucks... can't beat that. Made my day!
