I think that only counts for strays. Our ferals don't leave us anything. Crows around here don't leave anything shiny; they eat the cat food we put out for the ferals. Our crows must be hoarders!

Maybe "Line" them using cat food and follow.

Pack rats got the rumor assigned of leaving shiny things too. Dropping what they were already carrying to pick up something else.
( Not unlike humans distracted by the next shiny thing...)
