Woo hoo, last hunt of '07 and 8 keepers!! Silver!

Well I had been planning to go today with BaldingBoy for our last hunt of 2007. He came in this morning and told me his wife grounded him and he couldn't go with me to detect. >:( :( Well what was a guy to do go or not go? BB made sure to let me know that I was NOT allowed to go to any of the sites we have been hunting. Guess he didn't want me digging his planted coins. ::) ;) :)

Well I decided to go anyway and I had asked someone today that has an older house in town and she gave me permission. The only catch was that anything before 1940 they wanted to keep. So me in my brilliance thinking to myself I will never find anything that old any way so why not, I agreed? ??? Dumb move on my part.

Clock out time came and I changed into my detecting clothes and headed to the newly acquired site. BB called me 4 times in like 10 minutes telling me how sorry he was he couldn't make the hunt. :( One time he was even crying a little. When I pulled up and the male homeowner who knows me asked me what I was doing there. I informed him I was going to detect and he said "Oh you are are you? Don't you think you should ask before coming onto someones property to dig holes?" Uh oh this didn't look good. Just then the lady that gave me permission pulled up and got out and says to her husband, "Oh yeah I told him it was OK for him to metal detect our yard." Well they had a few heated words and to make a long story short she won he didn't. The woman is my mother-in-law's cousin so it wasn't like I was a stranger to them.

After hunting for about 10 minutes I had 4 copper pennies to show for my effort and I thought to myself this is going to be a bust I wonder where I should go next? It was at that moment that the Beast took hold of my headphone cord and gave it a hard pull and screamed SILVER at me. I mean it literally said SILVER SILVER SILVER!!! Popped out a 1944 quarter. Well that got my heart pumping a little. Then I got a signal as I was turning to walk away and out came a 1926 and 57 wheat from the same hole. A few feet to the left and I found the little square that I think is a piece of jewelry. Not 5 minutes later I get a good signal and then I dug the first 27 wheat, it was only 1 inch deep which seemed a little weird to me. A few feet more and I found the big ball thing. It is HEAVY! Well I found a few dimes and a quarter and then got a weird tone and I thought to myself, "Ah ha an Indian Head" turned out to be the Missouri Tax Token. It is in the best shape of the four I have found to date which isn't saying much. So I was walking along and I got a really good hit in the silver range again and I dug up the 64 dime. While I was trying to move some of the dirt away from it I dropped it and couldn't find it. I went to my car and got out the Deleon. I found the dime and at the same place I dropped it I got what the Beast was saying Iron at 5 inches. So I decided to dig it up and get it out of my way and I am GLAD I did cause it turned out to be a 1937 Merc!!!! My second one this year!! Then as I was filling my hole I accidentally knocked over the Beast and it squealed Silver again and out pops the 56 dime!!! Four silvers in one night, I was rocking and rolling now. I decided to head back to where the silver quarter was found but there wasn't anymore Silver I was going to find tonight. I did find one last wheat penny. Just before leaving I found the thing that has the three metal disks. I don't know what it is. The two shiny disks were on the outside and the darker disk was in the middle.

Sadly it was about time to go and that was the end of the good signals. I missed BB and I wanted to tell him how great the night went so I called him. No answer on his cell so I called his house, his wife informed me that BB was supposed to be hunting with me tonight? Well I didn't tell her he wasn't, I told her I just called to tell her about the 4 silver coins I found then I hung up before she could ask to speak to BB. :-[ :-\ ;) My cell rang then an it was BB he was down at our other place with a violin trying to woo the college girls. He told me the police had just pulled up and he had to go. Then he asked me if I could make bail for him. Maybe I should go get him. . . . . . . . . . . . . . . .. . . . . nah. :)

Great finds for the last hunt. Now you can be at peace over the winter.

I presume the two pull tabs in one corner of one photo represents the
40 pounds of pull tabs that you actually found, no?

actually that is all I dug, I ignored the targets that fell in that range this time because I plan on digging all of them when I go back.

Yeah I am gonna cry when I have to give up the 37 Merc! It is only the second one I have found and I love the coins. But I wouldn't have found it if I hadn't agreed to give up anything pre 1940. So I guess I will just have to get over it... :'( :'( :'( :'( :'(

That sucks! Our landowners don't expect anything from us even though we tell them we are finding 1700s coins. I guess some people are better than others. You are definitely one of those good dudes for giving it up. :)

Always stick to your word. Its all our hobbie has left. Without it you may as well join those who go at night without permission. (I know your do the right thing)

I recently showed the farmer all the capbadges I had found on his field & said he could choose the ones he liked. He took my only Royal Flying Corp (before it became the RAF) & a rare ship Anson Regiment. Now I don't normally give up items that I have 1 of but I kept my word. He is now happy & realises my sacrife which will make him sweet in future & will enhance my good reputation. This often leads to more searching area & this is what may happen with you. She will be talking to others saying how you gave up your oldest item & those listerning will think your the kinda guy they would like on their land.

The type of agreements I normally have is:
I have first refusual of anything found. However they are entitled to half the value if they so wish (This hardly ever happens, as I keep them sweet)
I will make them a running collection of seconds.
Treasure Trove items - ones I hand in by Law, they will get 1/2 the value.

ME,
Glad to see you found some silver to end the year with. Its still snowing here in the Midwest and will be awhile before we can get out again. I just spotted an area where they have tore out several old houses though so I may get a chance to detect yet before the end of the year.
Congrats Jim
