World war 2 artifact help?

I found these two weird bolts sitting next to 20 cartridges from an M1 Garand at a world war 2 training base and I can not figure out what they are??

If threaded inside they could have gone on studs either on or through plating.

I'd say hex pipe caps if they are threaded inside.

Cap nuts. Used when you don't want exposed threads on a bolt/stud.
