I am wondering if this is a worn knife or??

I think it might be chalcedony?

Or is it a lancelot or spear point?
I don't think it is a point because the sides are worn and very dull like it was used for cutting

Looks like a Knife to me larson and a very nice one at that. I don't think I would refer to it as "worn out", but more as "well used". I'm sure that piece has skinned many a Bison.

Thank you SRV,
I appreciate your info
I am not as knowledgeable as many of you members
maybe we can call this knife as one that could really use re-sharpening
what kind of material is this?
once again, thanks, Larson1951

or mammoth. I think it's an old one larson.

Not Chalcedony, that's for sure. I am assuming it is from your site. Is there any basal grinding?

Joel

thanks Quito, no basal grinding that I can tell

I do not know how to tell basal grinding as well as you experts though

It sure does look like it has heavy use-wear. Points were sometimes used as knives. The base and stem looks intentionally ground and heavily ground at that. I'd say that is a Paleo, possibly even a Clovis. Doesn't anyone else think so?

Very nice artifact, Larson!

Clovis certainly crossed my mind runtee.

Viewing the photo I would also say basal edge grinding is present.

Nice. I am going to enjoy you going through your collection this winter. I see you have the snow and have been watching it march across your area. Stay safe. I might get the boat out this weekend if the water goes down. :icon_sunny:

You can feel basal grinding on your lips. Dullness VS. sharp edge can be felt this way. Try running ALL edges of a decent point(not paleo) across your lips and then do the same with the base of this one and report back. I believe some later points also exhibited basal grinding to. I live in the south and your area might be different.
Nice knife!

That is true, Newt. Grinding occurs in all periods from Paleo to Historic. However, a lot of Paleo points because of the way they were made had uneven, bumpy edges. Thus, they were ground heavier to level out the high spots. That is what I've noticed anyway.

I think that is a Clovis knife and if it isn't I'd still say definately a paleo knife of some kind. Either way its a very nice piece.
