Metal Detecting
I've had my Silver uMAX for a little while now and I think its great, I like it a lot. I bought it as a "tester" to see if I was going to like metal detecting or not and did not want to spend a whole lot of money at first. Well I love metal detecting and am now comfortable selling the uMAX and upgrading to a better unit if neccessary. I live in Arizona where the soil is pretty mineralized and I like to spend my time relic hunting for old mining/calvary/indian stuff and sometimes trying to find gold nuggets in dry washes. Haven't spent a great deal of time coin shooting in parks because the great outdoors in the deserts and mountains is what I prefer. What do you guys think? Will it make a big difference?

well honestly i think the vaquero would be a better choice just because of the manual ground balance and you stated that the ground was pretty mineralized so this machine would handle it for sure, everything is identical as the cibola but just the manual ground feature plus the freq is different to from the silver umax 10.6 khz to 14.3 14.5 14.7 it has a shift built in as you probably know butthose are the only diferences

Whats a "butthose"? Just kidding ;D
The Vaquero is a little out of my price range but the manual ground balance feature sounds kinda nice considering where I live.
Is it hard to fiddle with? Do you have to constantly adjust it while you're detecting?

well it depends on the the very soil that your hunting, usually you set ground bal up and thats it and go but sometimes highly mineralized can change quickly in front of you a few steps ahead so on rare ocasion you have to fiddle with the ground bal that much but can happen.

and another thing i forgot to mention besides i can"t seperate words is that if you do get the cibola if your in a budget mode is take soil samples of the area's that you think you will hunt the most and send them back to tesoro and send detector of course and they will match your ground to that soil sample and should get better depth penatration after that!

If you want to stop and ground balance every few feet get the V.

Does the Cibola penetrate or discriminate better than the Silver uMAX?
Just got back from two days of metal detecting out in the mountains and am learning more and more about the uMAX but if the Cibola is better I wouldn't mind buying one.

yes the cibola is deeper and has many great reviews and so does silver so you'l have to decide?

Well I took pretty good care of my Silver so I'm fairly certain I can get most of my money back on it so buying a Cibola shouldn't hit my wallet that hard. The Cibola isn't a super expensive detector anyways and if I feel like upgrading and giving it a try I think I should.

Kool, let us know how ya like it . I've ben wantingto get one my self.

I think I'll get on ebay this weekend and order it!
The only thing I'm apprehensive about that will be a change from my Silver is that "all metal" mode is only accesible on the Cibola via the pushbutton. On the Vaquero you can switch to it via the DISC knob but on the Cibola you can only be in it while the pushbutton is depressed. This means that the Cibola is always used in DISC mode. Should be fine tho. The more I used the Silver the more I left it on FOIL as I was hunting because I was digging up way too many old bailing wires for barbwire fences! I am still pretty new to MD'ing and I'm just learning as I go so I imagine running the Cibola in DISC mode all the time will be just fine and will be what I'll want to do anyways. If I need to I can always crank the DISC way down to 'minimum' if I really feel like I'm missing anything out in the desert.

That is what i did not like about the cibola ..no all metal mode.

I know what you mean Keppy, I've had the Vaquero, cibola and tejon, use a bandido II micromax now, kind of a combination of all three machines, just lower freq.
