So, I still have a 27" TV. I can upgrade to a 42" HD LCD TV but to pay for it (or justify it to the wife) I would have to sell my Excalibur. I really didn't get to use it much this last summer. I did enjoy doing a different type of detecting but my lack of success makes me wonder if I should keep it. I know I would "use" the TV more than the water detector (long winters here) and the family would benefit but I wonder if I would just end up buying another water detector later.....

I wouldn't. Monty

I have to be with Monty on this one too. Getting rid of the Excal would be a huge mistake as one nice find would pay for the TV. You need to buy the wife a nice ring and then "find it for her." If you enjoy the detecting, that is all that matters. It isn't about the finds, but the more you get out, the more you find.

Do not get rid of the excalibur! :) I got a Tesoro Tigershark and I have only used it twice so far this year. But weather changes and you will be able to use your excalibur more often and get more out of it. If you buy the TV, you can sit there and not experience the fresh air and the finds! You can watch them, but it would not be the same as being out in the :icon_sunny:

I had to sell my CZ7a, Explorer, and XLT to buy some items..I regret it to this day, a few months later I did buy another Explorer but I had the other detectors all setup the way I like them with different coils and stuff. Not to many hobbies out there come close to metal detecting. Personally if I were you i'd get a Sears card, they have some awesome deals on LCD and Plasma TV's right now with 0% financing for a year? Then you could just pay it off monthly and maybe even pay a percentage of that with clad or jewlrey you find? Say 900? for a nice 42in 1080 LCD over 12 months counting tax and stuff say 81 bucks a month. That shouldnt be too hard with a few good days detecting a month? The detector will easily pay for itself and the TV over the course of a few years or less. Thats what i'd do (well what im going to do, im getting my parents one for Christmas) ;D

Are you Insane ?

Will HDTV make TV Anymore Enjoyable ?

Now had you used it more, you would have been able to turn all that gold into an HDTV!

I've gotta agree... one good ring and you can buy a couple of idiot boxes...

A better solution would be to by everyone in the family their OWN detector, then you can have some real outside fun as a family and go to the beach, parks, picnics, trails, fields, streams.... ohhh the possibilities.

Thanks for the encouragement not to sell the Excalibur. Some great points made. I won't sell it. I'll get through another year resisting the temptation to buy the big screen. Once football season is over it's usually pretty easy to forget about it.

I got a big screen, a 52" and also have my metal detectors. My oldest son got transferred to Naples, Italy two months after buying his $3000 big screen, he didn't want to take it because the power is different over there and he couldn't use it, so he said, "Dad, do you want this big screen", I said, " I'll buy it from you", he said, "no, it's a gift! It's great for football games and did I mention....It was free? Ha ha, sorry, just had to rub it in, hope you can get one in the near future but don't sell your MD's. Good hunting. John

Now Bob,
Ask a question like that on Treasurenet? Were you surprised at the answers?
Just my two wheaties, but I wouldn't sell it to buy anything. I'm right along with the others on this, find cool stuff and clad and buy a TV later. I can tell from your posts that you have an absolute blast detecting, so........

Wishing you the best of the holiday season!

Good Luck,
Mark
