Found this wrench (about 8 inches long) near an old water pump station. I researched "types of wrench" and "antique wrenches" on the net and couldn't find any pictures like this one. Anyone know what this is used for? The other side has a six-sided nut wrench indentation just below the "star" section. Am I right in assuming the "star" section is used for a square nut head? How about its age?

Re: Wrench type and age?

All of the hydrant & water valve wrenches shown have a 5 sided nut. That's probably to prevent the average Joe with an open end or box type wrench from messing with them. This wrench looks to be for square nuts and normal 6 sided nuts if I'm reading your post correctly about the opposite side of the wrench being 6 point. I have seen this type of wrench supplied with machinery such as lathes, etc. I'm thinking it's probably not a water valve wrench though. More likely came from a machine shop. Age ? Less than 100 years old from the looks of it. The set screw is so you can lock the wrench onto the nut if you want to for bolts you might be constantly loosening & tightening and leave the wrench in place. Can you post a pic of the other side.

Re: Wrench type and age?

It is a valve wrench like 4H pointed out. I worked for the water and sewer department for 10 years and we used many different variations of this type of wrench. These type of wrenches were used mainly in above ground applications, such as in a pump house or master meter vault. The water main valves that are underground we shut on and off using a long, square headed t-handle wrench, that because of its length, you naturally couldn't use it on a valve at waist level inside of a building.

Used on square headed water and wastewater valves....final answer. ;D

Yep, valve handle. It was removable so the valve couldn't be tampered with. Had them all over the plant where I worked. Tony

Valve wrench or valve handle. To be used on various types of valves.
That ones not that old.
I've been in the industrial supply business 23 yrs. :)

Re: Wrench type and age?

looks like a universal valve wrench due to the adjustible screw on the side

The adjustable screw is used to lock the handle down to the valve. Te remove the handle, the screw was loosened. Most plug valves and some ball and gate valves have a square head. The handle is made like it is so you can flip it over to get anotherangle on it, for tight spaces and such.
