I got these yesterday and from the little research i've done I think they are WWI era British or maybe Aussie canteens. What I can't figure out is the bag they are in. They don't look like anything I can find online. Also one of them is stamped on the inside with someone's name and the city of "Bern" which is in Switzerland as we know. What does this have to do with Britain if these are in fact British? Any ideas?

Bags are Swiss - I have one I use for my fishing gear.

I think the inner pocket is for a spare gas-mask filter cylinder - not a canteen. :dontknow:

Thanks Charlie P. looks like you got it right. I found this on a Swiss military collectors forum-http://www.gwamp.com/offtopic/viewtopic.php?f=2&t=979 down towards the bottom of the page. Shows a reproduction next to it also.

The neck of the flask was some times painted blue to let you know it was for water.
The entire bottle is enameled blue not just the neck. With further research... The bottle has the color of the Mark VI model, but the small wire “eye”, welded to the shoulder and neck of the bottle identifies it as a Mark VII model introduced in 1939. Maybe it's an early model, a case of using up the old before the new or as the link provided says "waste not want not"..
