are any of those numbered? If so, the number would be on the edge of medal.

Sorry did not see you reply. Non are numbered

I am not in the market for a medal except for a Silver Service Star. I have a plaque with all my Dad's military papers and pictures. He was in WWII and spent 18 months in Europe in 1944and '45 as a cannoneer on a 155mm Howitzer motorized cannon. He was at the Normandy Invasion (D-Day), the Ardennes Forest, the Battle of the Bulge and others. He spent time in England, France, Belgium, Holland and finally in Germany. Among his medals it lists a Silver Service Star and I have never been able to find one or find out just what it was. Monty

All it says is Medals: Good conduct, Silver Service Star

Ok, I checked all the federal military sites and had no luck but was referred to the local VFW as they seem to have some pull with the military. Waiting on reply. Thanks a bunch everyone. Monty

try these links. it may shed some light on why it be so difficult to find.

this one next seems to be the best link to explain the star:

hope some of this helps.

to me it means he was awarded with good conduct five times. or because he fought at the different campaigns you mentioned.

a gov't site allows you to determine exactly what a veteran was awarded and request replacements from the gov't. i believe as the relative you can do this. the link is:

Dad should have received a WWII Victory Medal. On this he would have attached his Silver Service Star indicating he was in 5 major campaigns of the war. He probably also should have got the National Defense Medal, the Overseas Service medal, the French Croix De Guerre (French Liberation) and the Belgian Croix De Guerre (Liberation of Belgium). He was also at the liberation of Holland but they never provided a medal. I found out that a Silver Service Star was equal to 5 Bronze Service Stars. For each major battle or campaign you are in a bronze service Star is awarded. But the Silver Service Star is penned onto the Victory Medal and he never received one although he was eligible. Hope that clears things up. Monty

And Monty said thanks! It makes Dad's memorial plaque look real nice. I let my sister borrow it and I'll post a copy when she gives it back. Monty
