I recently purchased an xterra 30 and have a question. I went out Saturday to an old home place, and on a couple occasions had a good sound and vid, only to dig and find rusty metal... a rusty strap, and something that I have no idea what is, but is rusty..The vid were 40, and 32--locked on fairly well, with little jumping... my question is this... I had the sensitivity up to 8 and 9... was it set too high?? Will a high sensitivity affect the vid??? Oh, and a few times, it would lock on -4 (rusty).. and if it hit a blade a grass or something, it would jump to 12 or so.. is this affected by too high sensitivity as well??? It is North East Texas sandy loam...

If the item you thought you were going to dig was a coin, my question would be.........did you dig deeper or around? It could've been a coin in or around what you found. Another thing I have noted with the detectors I have used, ACE 250 and Explorer XS is that after disturbing the soil, sometimes the target will not sound off anymore. In most instances, you can still pin-point it though, and sometimes that is not even the case. When I lose a signal, wether partially or fully (No signal with or without PP'er), I keep digging where I believe it last was. This has worked out big time for me in more than a few occassions. In the scenario you describe, after finding that junk my first step would be to rescan the hole. If no sound, engage the pin-pointer to see if it locks on to anything. That could be the target. If that is not the case, dig a little deeper and wider just to be safe.

Sometimes rusty or large iron will beep as a coin. But usually it will pinpoint larger than a coin. Digging is the only way to know sometimes.. ???

Good advice... I did rescan the holes, but did not put in pinpoint and rescan... and yes, they were sortof large...but I dig most things anyway.. especially at this place... I just wanted to make sure the sensitivity was no set too high, affecting the vid.. I dont even know if it does affect the vid...

If you relying on the TID and your sens is way too high your TID can be a little jumpy.

Ok, good.. I did not know if it affected the tid or not.. I had it on 8 and 9.. and will back it down to 5 and see how it goes....

One other thing for you to know. All of the Minelabs I have used are HOT on iron. They will find it even if it is the size of a BB!!

So turn down the Sens just a little and you should be ok. I dig almost everything anyway because of this but maybe it will help you.

pass your ring finger hand holding a nail over the coil and notice the two diffrent signal.

YES - turn the sensitivity DOWN!

What I wrote elsewhere:

Well, I'm a Newbie and got the X-terra 30 about a month ago.
I had heard the Minelab machines were the Cadillac of detectors,
but being new, I didn't want to spring for the top of the line just yet.

I bought a used one on eBay.

My take:
1. A VERY capable and effective machine. Light weight, easy to learn.

2. Plenty of depth and sensitivity.
Depth is not a problem. I was able to find a bobby pin at 6 inches.
Most old coins are less than 6 inches in my area anyway.
I've found coins down to 10 inches.
When I first got it I made the mistake of
thinking max sensitivity was best, but way too much noise, so I scaled it back
to 7 or 8 out of 10 and it works much better.

3. Best advice is take some known targets and get to know what
signals, strength, reading, and depth you get from them, then decide what
values you want to notch out. I notched out tabs and lose some nickels, but
by doing so I eliminated a lot of trash and upped my hourly take to a much
higher level overall. By NOT digging inconsistent or "blippidy" signals
I more than doubled my take of real coins.

4. Get a decent set of headphones.

5. Minor problems: Dirt. I get dirt all over the control panel.
I've taken to placing a heavy clear-plastic bag over the panel to keep it clean.
I punch holes in it for the cable lead and the headphones, then tape it
around the handle.

(My 2-cents)
Enjoy!! - the X-30 is quite a capable machine, and I can keep up with
ANY of the more expensive models.

from what I've learned so far
1st turn down the sens a few notches,
if it jumps more than one step, like 42 to 38 or 36 to 40 then it 99x not a coin or if it shows only one like 34 to 36 or 42-40 it usually a coin.

Great advice on only jumping one notch.. I have not been digging everything.. so, if it jumps even a notch, I have skipped.. but wont anymore.. good advice..

And, I now run the sensitivity at 6 and it seems to do much better...

I know what you mean about the dirt.. I dig with my hands, and get everything very dirty.. my poor hand grip is just a mud sponge...

I agree with that too.
If it is steady on the reading it's generally a coin.
If it jumps all around, or changes on the scan left-to-right from
right-to-left, it's generally junk.
The ONLY jump I've seen is on dimes, where it will sometimes
change from 28 to 32 or back again.

I used my new sunray gold pro headphones yesterday and wow I can't believe what a difference it makes. I spent less time going back and retrying targets and could everything the detector was saying... man if you don't have hp's get some... I can't say which ones but I love the ones I got.

I don't know if the x30 has the noise cancel but I set it every time i go out, ground balance every time, even after I am hunting for more than 30 mins or move more than 60 yds, and I definitely put my cell phone well away from my detector.. I don't know why but it seems it has trouble when my phone is on my hip next to the control housing.... or maybe it is that no one can reach me when Im detecting... ::)

The 30 doesn't have an adjustable GB or noise cancel. But it is a great detector.
