After having the detector stored all last year due to me having elbow surgery, I pulled it out today to get it ready for a hunt later this week. When I took it out to the front yard to test run it, it went nuts. It is constantly showing a signal and different readings. Even when holding it in one spot it will jump all over, as in reading 28, 36, 42, 12, 15. I am wondering if the coil on it is bad or if the unit itself went to heck.

Any ideas or suggestions would be greatly appreciated.

Thanks and HH to everyone

First....is there a Wi-fi router operating nearby? It could be that a neighbor now has one that didn't before. Take it to a different site and try it again.
Next, try a factory reset. It often clears up "glitches", and is considered by many as a maintenence procedure. Press and hold the Chevron button and turn on the power. It should display FP for a few seconds.
Other than that, inspect the coil for damage that could possibly have happened in storage. If you have another coil, try it.

And if none of that does the trick, you're probably looking at sending it in.

Batteries batteries!!!

Its EMI fields. Electiical Interference Turn off your cell phone, any buried dog fences or security systems. Sometimes being able to change frequencies helps, but the 250 doesn't have this feature.

My x terra 70 did something similar first two times time out this year. Try taking the batteries out and leave the compartment open to dry overnight in a warm area. Also disconnect the wire to the control box during this time. I think I had condensation trapped somewhere, but it stopped after that and I haven't had the problem since. Good luck.

Thanks everyone for your responses and suggestions. I have the machine unhooked and opened up for the night and will try all the other ideas tomorrow. Will post if it fixes the problem. Thank you again.

Curt

Well looks like I will be boxing it up and sending it in to Minelab for service/repair. Thanks again for all the responses to my problem. Now to find out how much this is going to cost me from Minelab.
