Depends, I have a Xterra 70 and its a keeper!! I had two f75 first was doa, second was way unstable, sent back and when received back a little better but not very usable.. Build problems also..Very deep when you find a very rare area it can be used.. Loved the iron meter on it.. Traded it for the Exterra.. Much better all around detector and with the 3KHz coil killer deep for copper and silver.... The F75 could be a great machine with some work from first texas but I wouidn't but another one!! Maybe look at the Teknetics T2 for a alternative to the F75 seem to have the same performance for a better buck..

I had an almost identical experience to Cosmic's. I too had two different F75s and got tired of trying to use them in areas with any EMI. The X-terra 70 on the other hand has been perfect for me. I'm actually able to predict with a reasonable amount of accuracy (compared to any of the other detectors I've owned) what the target will be before I dig it. Its lightweight and has a great mix of features. In-fact it was an accident of sorts that led me to choose it as a replacement for the F75 in a trade. The guy I was hunting with last year had one and liked it and it was at a comparable price point when I traded, so I thought what the &*ll I'll try it. I'm completely happy I did.

I like the F75-T2, and think it's a good all around machine. I've made some good finds with it, and it goes deep. It's got some good features as mentioned above, but in no way is it as stable, not even in the same world, as the Xterra 70, and has no more depth. The F75 may not be as deep as the 70, although some may differ. The 70 is built far better, is infinitely more versatile, and has a much greater coil selection. And of course the 70 is $300 cheaper. To me if you're buying one detector, the 70 is by far the better choice.

I need to get back in this mix, as I had a Tejon and still have an Eldorado (right before Vaquero and very similiar). The Tejon is actually deeper in good dirt than the X-terra 70, but if you're hunting in moderately mineralized red dirt, they're equal and if its a little hot (bad) then the 70 has the edge. Also, the 70 will actually still ID good targets deeper than any VLF I've had experience with, even in moderate ground. The Tesoros are good, but you're going to have to put in a serious investment of time to get good with deep targets, which is not a bad thing, but if you're like me and don't have more than a couple of hours a week or every so often, then a Tesoro machine can take a while to hear and learn the subtle nuances that different targets provide. Also, the 70 has more versatility with the 3khz, 7.5 khz, and 18.75 khz coils. The Tejon is at 17 khz and doesn't have the same ability to hear deep iron the way the 3 khz coil does on the 70.

I agree with Bill on a number of things he wrote. I don't know how the Tejon works in good ground, because I've never hunted in good ground. In moderate ground its' depth is very good, and sometimes will hear targets the 70 won't. But that's true with any machine. That's why a lot of relic hunters go over the same ground with many different machines. The Vaquero in bad ground is a much deeper machine than the Tejon, at least for me, but I do like the dual disc of the Tejon. Similar to the Fisher 1266, which was and still is a good relic machine. I've owned many machines over the years, but would have to say that the 70 is a great all arounder, and if I had to choose one machine, that likely would be it.

I couldn't decide one brand over another, but wanted to try newer models. I bought used so I could get the Minelab X-Terra 70 & the Fisher F70. I feel these are the 2 best new lightweight target ID detectors under $799. HH, George (MN)

Well, I flipped the switch and went with the XT70 new for 525 plus I got the 6"dd 18.75 coil for an additional 85.00.
I hope these are good starting coils and am sure I will be looking to add a 3khz to the mix down the road.
Thanks for your input and I am sure I will have more questions in the future.

Makton you made a good choice and will be happy with the 70. The stock coil is great, and the 6" DD is hard to beat in trashy sites. It gets very good depth. Hope you enjoy it.

You made a wise choice !! I went to Lincolnway HS where your at and lived in Mokena, Frankfort area.. I went out for the first time this year, to a park a few blocks away from my house where the original courthouse stood.. Decided to use the XT70 with the 3KHzs coil and for a hour did good.. Found a few moderns and some junk.. I got tired of the all metal and went to a high silver disc program (eliminated the nickels) for a change.. I got a small signal reading 36-38 VDI and at 5" measured seen a rim of silver.. Reached down and I knew it was a silver dime so I placed it in a pill bottle with wet foam rubber sliced so I can put the coins each in a separate slot.. (I don't ever rub them to see what it is !!) I thought a good day with a silver rosie or merc.. When I got back to the house I rinsed what I found under running water.. A few modern and one 37 Wheatie and a copper nugget (glacial activity area).. I removed the dime from the wet foam and rinsed the dirt off.. Soon I seen the seated lady I knew it was a great day and when I got the magnifying glass out, WOW!!! So here's some pics..
PS. If the vdi jumps around more than 2 number its usually junk (like 32-38) if close like 36-38 definitely dig!!

That is a nice dime! I havent found a seated dime yet. Way to go

Cosmic,
That is one sweet dime. I hope the X70 can get me some 1800's silver which so far, has eluded me.
Any suggestions for areas in the Frankfort, Mokena area?
