The X70 is a smoother operating detector but the GT is a far superior detector depthwise and is much better beach hunter. 8)

Diddo in the Sov for all around use. It has much going for it and you should check out the field tests on Minelabs site.

With the Soveriegn, how is the learning curve? I am used to a 1980's era Garrett. Do you recommend the digital readout? Thanks.

PS: This is tough.

The Soveriegn is easy to use. You still have to understand its use and the controls and what they do but essentially its an easy detector to get along with. 8)

The Sov is a 17 freq BBS detector, the Xterra a VFLEX single freq.
Simply put, the Sov will be a detector that stays in your stable for years to come, while you will more than likely outgrow teh Xterra. Don't get me wrong, its a better machine than alot of what the other manafacturers are putting out, but for the price I would go Sov all day long.

The pros over the Sov for the Xterra are: Lightweight and uses only 4 AA batteries.

it uses 8 AA's in the reserve packs (extra incase you go on long hunts with no recharger), but the main Battery power source with the GT is 12V 1000mAh NiMH Rechargeable Battery Pack.

On the learning curve, the GT is my first detector ever, you talking about a learning curve learning the different tones instead of looking at a screen, I dont regret getting the GT at all.... lad I got it...

I have a Sovereign GT, when I posted that question I was looking at several detectors.
I like my GT ...I won't leave home with out it....and the extra battery pack. ;D
