Yankee camp gives up a cool hand cut 17th Corps Badge
Saturday and this afternoon I hunted the Yankee camp where a group of the 17th Army Corps camped on the way back to Washington for the "Grand Review" April 29-30 1865. I've posted several times since early December with my finds from this campsite. This is where I found the Virginia State Seal button a few days ago, and the site of the now historic (Marker to be erected shortly) and epic hand to fang combat between Modern Miner and the Copperhead.
Targets are scarce and getting scarcer at this spot. I really have to work slowly and dig every sound.
Saturday I came across two barrell bands within a foot of each other, the top part of a gold ring with small aquamarine colored stone (Engraved in script on back C.W.B) one Three Ringer and assorted iron and other junk targets. Today I was putting along, eyes to the ground, wary of slithering serpents. After 4 hours I had only managed two bullets, a large rivet, a pocket full of decayed square nails, buckshot, .22 casings and shotgun shells. I was preparing to make the long walk to the truck when I realized that I had laid my nice pruning shears down somewhere walked off.
I backtracked looking for the shears, all the while swing the coil of the AT PRO as I searched. At one point I wound up a few yards from where I found the Virginia Seal button and started back the other direction. I had only taken a few steps when I picked up a whisper of a signal. I cleared off about 3" of topsoil and rechecked the spot and the signal bounced around in the low 50s.
With the depth meter showing about 8-10", I dug carefully and checked the hole with my Propointer. At about 9" I picked up a steady tone from the Propointer. I scratched back the soil with my finger to reveal a small arrow cut from sheet metal. right away I knew that I was looking at a handmade 17th Corps emblem. Man, What a feeling!
