Thank you for the help last night Treasure_Hunter, I can post pics now. Can someone tell me what the object on the left is called? I know they attached to wood but are not traditional cultivators. There is a hole on the end of it that is not sharp nor shown in the picture. I’m trying to come up with the correct word to help a friend identify it.

Part of a sickle bar mower. Quills are African, snail shells are pretty.

Gunsil nailed it. It’s a sickle bar mower guard or sometimes called a rock guard.

Hey Coily , you probably already know , those quills were /maybe still are could be used for ice fishing.
Possibly in summer too.

Spotted some on the ice as a youth.
And the most sensitive floats for panfishing (or smaller like in Europe fishing roach ect.) are rigged similarly.
Thill brand makes some skinny ones to get rigging ideas. But there are other options too...

Who has a handful of porcupine quills lying around?

I always loved those rock guards as a kid, they look so wicked.

Coilygirl, here are some photos which show your Sickle Bar Mower Tooth Guard "in place" on the mower's bar. Some variations in the Tooth-Guard's form are known to exist. For anybody here who doesn't already know, a Sickle Bar Mower is farm harvesting equipment, not for mowing a lawn.

I think those old mowers like that are very interesting looking. Thank you Cannonball guy for posting the pics.
