Yesterday's Token Find

I spent the weekend at my parent's place for Thanksgiving and decided to do a little detecting at the community centre. Not a real old town but a lot of history including a stop on the underground railroad. I hunted a spot where a blacksmith shop stood as well as a skating rink later on. Dug a ton to pull tabs and a bunch of modern pennies which is what I thought this was as well. Turned out to be a Juke Box token...circa 1940s as per the best guess on the What is It forum. Nothing to write home about (since I was already there :laughing7:) but much better than a penny or pull tab!

That's a new one for me, never knew there were tokens for juke boxes
I always thought it was a cash only type of thing lol

Cool find!

Back in about 1975, Q. David Bowers wrote "A Tune for a Token" which was a supplement to the Journal of the Token and Medal Society. It detailed the intersection of two of his main interests - tokens and nickelodeon-type musical instruments. If I recall - and I'll be darned if I can find my copy of his work - that this was one of the "generic" tokens used for coin-operated player pianos and the like. Dated pre 1920, generally. If I come up with my copy, I'll post more.
