This looks like an old lightning struck tree to me.

To determine if it is more than that I would have to know more about the actual trail and the other trees in the area.
Are there any other trees marked in the erea?
Are there any stones or rock signs incorporated into this "trail"?

Kind of an interesting feature to spot. My first thing would be to sit on the stump with the back of my head by the heart and look for something else.

wish I had more time...the kids were running down the trail...we had just seen a mama bear and a baby...not much time to check it out!
