there are a lot of good books out there written by the folk that, while not the FIRST to explore or settle the area (any area), came shortly after so they documented the generation of Native people as they were just beginning to go through the transition of a new reality. Especially in the west where even 150, 170 years ago authors were starting to realize that Native culture was beginning to vanish and once it was gone it was gone forever. I assume it was due to the fact that in the NE (eastern seaboard) that had already happened. If you have an interest in a specific area, email a local small town museum, they are actually a wealth of information an I find them eager to help...often staffed by volunteers older than your grandma who have lived there all their lives and know things not written in books.
