Well got to a site this morning and found it crawling with zombies ( pay to detect, internet detecting club). These are becoming a real pain. Can't blame the farmer, money talks. Had to move to another site, that sometimes gives up the odd find. Very quickly found this, and then nothing else in the rest of the search. It's silver and hand made, showing the letters HC. It's just short of one inch in height, the back is plain and as no fixings.

Robert.

I'm less inclined to think it's coincidence between yours and Crusader's, and that they are two different customized designs of the same logo or abbreviation.

I've got a gut feeling (usually wrong) that these things are late Medieval. Either religious, or some type of retainer (follower) badge/mounts.

This thread just got massively more interesting with the addition of Cru's matching "emblem" . I think it's important to note that these two
examples are hand fabricated (not cast or die struck) this is evident from the hand piercing of the open areas , also while they are very similar ,
they show enough individual differences to remove any doubt about their having each been hand crafted . This small batch method of crafting
I think argues for a small ,select group who would be awarded this emblem , this I think excludes main line military , but might still include a
special detail (private guard detail of some sort ). This also could well be an emblem for a high society private mens hunting club . How the
silver piece functioned is an interesting question to me as well - As thin as they are , I'm thinking these may have been affixed to a wooden
box top (tobacco related ?) I know I'm tossing a lot of guesses out there , but I've been a silversmith for a while ,and I'm passionate about
old silver .

Rob...the lettering doesn't lend itself to Old English lettering(Black Letter) I think post medieval is more likely.

I'm thinking 17th century Colin, lots of different factions about then, religious and others. For these items to be made in silver, also I think denotes some importance. The crudeness of the workmanship also looks early.

Rob...found a couple of very similar livery buttons..Carder and Cohen.

Good job SilverSearcher ! The second image you provided is clearly similar enough to convince me that you've I'd these , now if we
can get a good theory as to where /how these thin cut silver pieces were intended to be displayed (function )

Colin , not so fast. Great work (but they look machine worked). What are they commemorating ?.

Colin you I think are correct it's a family moto, many of these rich families go back centuries. The thing to do is to id the family.

That might be hard, because although I think just after medieval, it could be just around the late 1500's, another thought was a heraldic motto :dontknow:
