Hi everyone,

An other Spanish silver find! And I finally managed to clean this baby. It was not easy as it had a really thick hard crust. Found it on my river spot where I dug my other 5 colonial Spanish silvers and about 30 or so 1730's-1810's halfpenny's. Was super excited with this one as it's solid and heavy coin. At first though it was a 4 Reales as it's a bit larger and heavier than the other ones but after measuring it at home and cleaning up a bit it's clearly an other 2 Reales (should have listened to Iron Patch when he told me so an hour before :laughing7:). That particular coin really made me work cleaning it. I'll include the pic of before the cleaning so you have an idea. If you have ever found a water dug old silver you probably know what i'm talking about. If not it's like removing some old paint from your wall hopping not to damage the second layer underneath it in the process. Very happy with this find and with the cleaning result!

I will make a group pic of all my old silver and coppers from that spot (two weeks total) in a couple of days.

Thanks everyone for the comments. I left the coin a bit dark at some spots as I'm satisfied with the resultt. Don't want to clean it any further and risk to damage it.

A great little hunt!

wow!!! you have one amazing spot. Do you think it was a crossing point or a building site? Rivers were a highway back in the day. always a source for easy access to detectorists as most communities did have a river close by.

That's about good as one could expect considering what you started with, a world of difference

Are you finding any other interesting relics aside from the buttons and coins you've been posting ?

Thank You.
Yes, that's what I think as well. Probably a crossing point.

Thank You.
I have tried different methods. First boiling in the mix of olive oil and lemon juice (it did remove the first layer of thick crust) than working with the tooth pick (Result 2nd picture) and than the gentle electrolysis of hot water, aluminum paper and baking soda (Result 3rd picture)

I am going t have to move to ever find anything like that. Congratulations. Love seeing the things I will never have a chance at. A silver coing here would have to have been dropped by Desoto himself!!!!!

Thanks!
But those coins circulated well into the 19th century. I don't know the history of your region but if there was any monetary exchange where you live at that time there's a huge chance it was with those type of coins. We never had Spanish explorers over here and still the most common silver coin by far from 1700's is a Spanish Real.
