1st Post, New Member, Found a Nice 1!

Hi everyone. Just came across this forum while trying to identify an artifact my son and I found yesterday. Thought I could use some help. I've only found a handful in my life, but dad and grandpa accumulated a decent stash of nice points and stone tools from farming over the years. I think the material is either Burlington or Oneota chert and the location is NC IL. It's 2.25" tall and 1.75" wide. If anyone has a type and era for this point I'd love to hear. Thanks for looking!

I can tell at first glance that there's 2 maybe 3 Hardins in pic1 (2:00 & 9:00 & maybe the larger one at 6:00).

I agree, with the one at 9:00 appearing to be a knobbed variant. My third one though is the one at 10:30 in the 4th pic, but it's hard to tell with the white on white.

I'd be soaking them in acetone to get that polish off, but that's just my unsolicited preference. Regardless, very nice collection made even more special having been found by your father and grandfather. Thanks for sharing them with us.

Thanks for all the great feedback! I've spent a lot of time the past day looking thru the projectilepoints site that's been linked to a few times...very helpful. I'd never heard of Hardin before, but now know quite a bit about them. Does anyone know what type the long 1 at 11:00 is in pic #1 of post #19? I was always amazed it could be found in a field without being broken. I know they always assumed rotary hoeing broke so many of them.

I could be wrong but that looks like a classic Neuberger. A very nice Archaic find, no matter what the type.

Thanks to all for the warm welcome and feedback. I'll enclose another pic without fingers blocking it. It does look similar to the Neuberger that ToddsPoint showed above, but it also resembles the others mentioned - Kirk and Synder. Yes I like getting the kids out of the house as much as possible. I have 2 younger than Henry who was pictured in my first post, and I have 1 just a year older, who has actually found a couple points on his own already. I'll show pics of those as well. He's usually with me more often, and he was kinda sad that he wasn't there when we found the nice one. I'll get a pic or 2 up here of my dad's old stuff as well. They used to find a lot of it while row crop cultivating with the front mount cultivators. He said ya couldn't always stop in time. We also got the kids a starter metal detector for Christmas that we haven't even had time to open yet, but plan to in the next week or so. Much to learn there! So I'll be spending some time over on that section of the forum probably quite a bit. Thanks again.

Metal detecting can be a great hobby. I don't know your exact location but there is a great metal detector club in La Salle, Illinois. If you are not close to them then someone in their club might be able to direct you to one closer to you if you are interested. You might also be interested in gold prospecting. Most people don't know that Illinois has flour gold in many creeks that was brought down by the glaciers. Once you find a couple tiny specks of gold, you are hooked.

Hi everyone. Planting season here in IL means potential random arrowhead discovery season. The consensus guess in this thread was that the original artifact was a Neuberger. In the same field yesterday I think I may have found another Neuberger. Had just pulled our planter into the field and was unfolding it, and could spot something white in color just in front of a row unit. Thought you guys would like to see it.
