The fun begins in freezing sleet showers which numbed our hands. Still managed 3 hours on one of our last options - a stubble field.

This may sound crazy, but the harder the field & the less the finds, the more I work & the more I enjoy sniffing out the odd gem in a field that no others would bother with. I'm ever the optimist & struggle to drag Dad along with me, whilst we struggle to get a button or two. I know from experience that even the hardest of fields, will have that 1 find that makes the many acres & manhours worthy of our efforts. So I'm sticking with this one to the bitter end - however, this is not one you do unless you have no other option. Bad times forces your hand, you either rest up for the Winter & wait for Harvest or you get stuck into the hard stuff! I like to grit my teeth ;D

Dad found a nice 17th Century 'nipple' Button (commonly associated with the English Civil War) - nice to find with a black patina :)
I got something I nearly chucked in my rubbish pouch as a piece of slag. Luckily I checked it out a little & was more than surprised. Its a Zoomorphic (Beast head, most likely a Dragoon) Stirrup Terminal - Saxon or Viking of circa 10-11th Century. Very Rare - only got my first one last year. I study these and its a Variant I've yet to see, so a special and provenanced find. Totally random from this site & probably lost whilst they were galloping across this bog land.

In the usual way, I got a Silver Sixpence 1929 on the way back to the car.
