UNDER the watchful lenses of 90 security cameras, the world's second-largest gold nugget has gone on display at the Perth Mint.
Only a brash and brawny thief could attempt a heist of the Normandy Nugget, which weighs in at 25.5kg.

Found in a dry creek bed near Kalgoorlie, 595km east of Perth, in 1995, the nugget is currently valued at $800,000.

It's on a 10-year loan at the Perth Mint from Newmont Mining Corporation.

Reputed to contain 80 to 90 per cent high-purity gold, the nugget has dazzled visitors as the showpiece of the mints' Gold Exhibition.

Following attempts by its finder to sell the nugget overseas and temptations to melt it down, Newmont Australia subsidiary Normandy Mining bought the nugget in 2000.

It is the 26th-largest gold nugget ever discovered and the second largest surviving nugget in the world.

Perth Mint chief executive Ed Harbuz said the nugget was expected to draw huge crowds and was a welcome addition to the mint's collection of gold bars and nuggets.

"It is a coup for the 100,000-plus people who visit our gold exhibition annually to be able to see this important cultural and heritage asset symbolising almost 160 years of gold discoveries in Australia," Mr Harbuz said.
