4 hours on my fave field-NEW PHOTO'S

I got to my field about 07.30 this morning but the farmer had only plowed about half of it, and the wrong half at that :laughing7:. So we had to be content with the "Button" end of the field. Still, I wasn't disappointed with my finds, a fairly good range I think. It would have been better, but I must have caught the volume dial for my headphones before I started and I didn't realise, it was below 1/4, until the last row :tongue3:. That's when I started to get decent results, anyway on with the pics.

Pic 1) These are the good buttons, including a 17th century "nipple" button, 2 livery buttons with a stags head, 3 military buttons and a "Rochford Union" button.

Pic 2) A closer look at the livery buttons

Pic 3) A sample of todays lead

Pic 4) Some of the more interesting bits. The buckle, thimble and winders I have id'd, but the other items are, as yet, unknown to me

Pic 5&6) A closer look at the items I have not id'd yet

Pic 7& 8 ) A Viccy Ha'penny and farthing ( in soak now) 1860 and 1881 respectively

It is a bit in yer face, isn't it ;D, and thats only the second ever nipple button for me :icon_thumleft:.

Re: 4 hours on my fave field

What's up deal with the 1/2 penny obverse? Looks like there's an arrow on her face, or is is a mint error...?
Thanks for throwing that US cent in the mix, helps for relative size on those good finds. I've been lying to women for years and really have no idea about size any more! ::) It does help.

Re: 4 hours on my fave field

Is that a 16c clothing fastener in the photo by the nails?

Re: 4 hours on my fave field

Hello Mate !
The 5 and 6 pics .. they seem to the 17th century, horse ornaments. :icon_scratch:
Greetings.

Re: 4 hours on my fave field

Nice finds, mate! Really good you found the other "nipple" button.......they should be in a pair!! :laughing7:

Tudor rose sexfoil - Leather decor
Broken Tudor Clothes fastener - missing hook
Right Hand item - interesting piece of openwork, can't see it well but looks Saxon :icon_thumright:

Overall, it looks like a worthwhile hunt :headbang:

Re: 4 hours on my fave field

Great finds!!, go back with full volume and you my clean up!!! :laughing7:

Re: 4 hours on my fave field

not bad for 4 hours...I usually can only find a fraction in that time. Nice looking brits...

Not sure if you knew this but most 'Union' buttons were the new name for the Poor house/workhouses, so although by the time of the button it was probably the Rochford Union infirmary, it had its roots in the Poor Law system :icon_thumright:

Re: 4 hours on my fave field

Object on the right hand side in pic 5-6 looks like a piece of viking urnesstyle something, something :icon_thumleft:

agreed, when I said Saxon, this period to me includes Anglo-Sandinavian (Viking), buts its unlike any mount I have seen & looks broken which makes IDing a little harder. I can now see the 2 blocked up holes where it fitted to leather but not sure what its function is :icon_scratch: Its definately the find of that day

Re: 4 hours on my fave field

Thanks for all the replies guys :icon_thumleft:. DMN, the mark on the coin is an old scratch, probably from being tumbled around the field. Cru and ohannos, thanks for the id on the saxon/viking piece, I'll clean it up and take better pics tomorrow. Also, Cru, thanks for the info on the "Union" button. And finally Hi Mike :hello:.

Cheers mate :hello:, it's the first bit of viking for me. I'm off out there again tomorrow, I think I'll go over the area again where I had the volume on my headphones too low. The farmer still hasn't plowed the other half of the field so I might have a bit longer left on it than I thought.

Well it fits into late Saxon early Norman Period...but you can add Viking to that  always a good sign from a field either way :icon_thumleft:
