That is big button... looks like it might fit over something like a guidon.

It resembles a general staff button that I dug last year. They were worn by union officers in the civil war.
Its a high convex button and has just lost the back. Heres the one I found. 8)

Yepper... General Service Staff button.. lots of them had iron backs... I have a few with nothing left of the back!! Great find!!
