I don't think it's a Clovis, or a Folsom. I think you are right.

Base is too wide for Agate Basin, looks more Clovis like, maybe an unfluted one. Nice find!

That sure is a nice one. :icon_thumleft:
Your friends point looks quite similar to a Plainview point.

Rege it has distinct fluting,I guess the pictures don't show it. That was my friends point it had to be Clovis because it's fluted. I brought up the point agate basins can also be fluted.

Your right it is fluted, base and sides should be ground. Still favor clovis ID in my opinion, has that nice rounded paleo point.

Cosmo - I don't think it's an Agate Basin, really I think it's a classic So Ill Clovis style knife. It looks like it may have been rebased from an originally longer point. Great piece. Love the Burlington.

That's a nice find, I think it's pretty safe to say that it's a Paleo-early Archiac piece. There must be at least a dozen and a half to two different fluted types that belong to that time period. The fact is that each of those types have variants, many of which are not pictured in point classification books and websites. Here are a few alternatives to the Clovis that have been found in southern Illinois. I'm not suggesting your friends piece is one or the other just wanted to throw some other possibilities out there because the almost straight base is problematic ( slightly concave ) for a Clovis...

I think the plainview type has possibilities as likely as Clovis but the fact is sometimes you may never know.

Nice find...I agree love the heat treated Burlington. The piece has a Clovis look to it..... Plainview's have a more developed flaking pattern then a Clovis point. At first I was thinking maybe a Sloan Dalton but the flaking is to crude to be one.

Thanks, everyone for your opinions. Get the point funny you mentioned plainview . That was my next question. This is another fine point found in southern Illinois. 2 inches. He is calling it a Clovis,I told him,I thought it was plainview, fact is I'm only right about half the time so would appreciate opinions more knowledgable than my own.

The next piece is another Clovis point. The last...well...I have a problem with it. It has a culmination of a couple of forms. It has a Angostura base...but has Agate Basin look to it. It is a oddity and brings about a couple of questions when I look at it. If I saw it for sale I would leave it alone.

Get the point looking at it under my 10 times loupe, It looks like a no brainer to me.However, I have heard some opinions from people who think that a Cobb blade is a preform to a snyders. Just a thought perhaps an agate basin is a Clovis preform. Any opinions

As for Agate Basin being a pre-form to Clovis, it is two different time-frames. Clovis pre-dates Agate by roughly 3,000 yrs +/- 1,000 so it would be a impossible for Agate to be Clovis's preform. I'd argue with those that would say Cobbs is Snyders preform. A North blade is most likely a Snyders preform. I would support a Cobbs blade to be a preform to a Dovetail and a couple of other beveled type artifacts in that same time range. Cobbs and Snyders are two different eras.

The first point you showed is a modern reproduction, Cosmo. The second two look to be angostura-related, depending on where found.

Neand, what do you see about it that makes you so sure it's fake? No one else had a problem with it or at least mentioned it.
