I know you said earlier Cru, that Roman bronze coins are not
highly prized by the British museums, . . . but they have to be
worth at least 50p each!?

What kind of pound value to you think that Dave might be
looking at as a reward when it's all said and done?

The valuation (not reward) is based on the market value. As a hoard it would be worth more than the sum of the individual coins due to its historical interest. The dig is yet to finish, so hard to guess before the total hoard & associated artefacts are totalled up. Bearing in mind the farmer gets 50% he may get a nice holiday out of it. (to me, it more important he did the right thing & we will all learn from the information & the site they are uncovering) I'm sure he enjoys working with the Archies, I know I do. 8)

Congrats on your find-of-a-lifetime! But I was curious about the land owner's thoughts on all this. He was kind enough to give permission, and now has a small army of people trooping back and forth through his property. Does he mind at all? We he be compensated for his troubles? I was wondering if he was sorry that he gave the "OK", or has he taken delight in all of this? Thanks for sharing with us - JHinPA

The Farmer is sooooooooo excited, I think more than me in fact! The 'small army' are very respective and not intrusive at all. As for compensation, Yes, Half the value of all we find so he wants us to find lots, lots more.. "... Get out there and get diggin..." was one line of his in a recent conversation

Thanks for letting me know how it works when you declare a large find to the authorities in the UK. I feel that if you at least attempt to do the right thing when you find something of value that's been lost, that's usually reward enough for me.

Yeah, good luck on the eval. Does that include the pottery or other artifacts, or just coinage?

And there do seem to be an awful lot of Daves in the world. But we're all awesome!

I agree 100%...it is awesome when a detectorist finds a historically important find then shares it with the world. I've had nothing but great experiences working with the archaeologists here in the states and it has opened up sites to me that I could not legally hunt otherwise. When I'm working on one of their sites I don't get to keep the items or even get part of the value but the honor in uncovering it is reward enough plus my kids thinks it great when they see my name in a museum under a artifact.

The times I've helped with offical digs, its the same as you state (hand everything over), I use it to suck their brains & share my knowledge. Great partnership.

Hopefully before Spring! A thaw has just started here and it should remain just above freezing for the next few days - (probably time for another dig) - but then we're getting blasted again with arctic conditions later next week - sodding weather!
