Was over at a buddies house showing him my new detector. He said "lets see if it will pick up a gold coin" and reaches up on his book shelf and pulls down a 1892 CC $10 gold eagle in a card board holder. I about freaked out as this is the first one I have ever held. His dad gave it to him. It was his grandpas before he passed away. My friend doesn't collect coins so he had no idea what it might be worth. I told him that he should have it graded to preserve it and find out it's value so he could ad it to his insurance policy. He figured it was worth around $300 but I think he may be surprised. What is the best grading service to send it to?

Also I added some pics he sent me. What do you guys think it would grade at?

Holy $hit!!!

Send it to http://www.pcgs.com/ They are the only one's you want grading a coin like this. If he wants to sell it, I'd highly recommend selling it here:

Un-believable. Plus it's a CC, which drives it's price way through the roof!! It's hard to say what it'll grade at. In that nice of condition, it's all about what they see under a microscope.

Here's some info from PCGS about it:

Here are some recent e-bay auctions for similar coins.

Just a guess from the pictures provided but I'd say it's AU to MS condition. PCGS price list is 1350 in AU and 3500 in MS60.

In the 2007 Red Book it says, "EF-40 (Extremely Fine) Small amount of wear on top of hair and below L in LIBERTY. Wear evident on wing tips and neck of eagle.
1892 CC (Mintage 40,000) $600.00

That's what it looks like to me.

Definitely use PCGS or NGC to get this graded and slabbed. It looks like it could be AU-50 to AU-55 to me,is that a little mint luster I see on the obverse around some of the stars on there? I guess we won't know till he has it graded.Don't use some fly by night grading service like NNC,NCGS,SEGS,PGS,INB or Trugrade.Notice how they all try to sound like the only 2 companies that are respected in this field? Good luck and let us know how it turns out.

The most telling detail is the flat spot on the hair below the ear.
