I just received my latest issue of Coin World with the monthly values insert. I cannot believe the jump in value some early Lincolns have taken in just one month. Some have more than doubled! Here's a random sampling (the first price is the October value, the second the Nov. value, all quotes are for "Good" condition coins):

1909-S $85/$110
1910-S $9/$17
1911-S $20/$30
1912-S $14/$25
1913-S $7/$15 [red](+114%!)[/red]
1914-D $175/$250
1914-S $14/$25
1915-S $9/$20 [red](+122%!)[/red]
1922 Plain $550/$750
1924-D $18/$40 [red](+122%!)[/red]
1931-S $70/$125

Anyone who has watched Lincoln prices over the years knows that fluctuations this drastic are unheard of. I wonder if this is an honest reflection of a series that hasn't significantly risen in value in decades or a cagey marketing ploy by hobbyists who foresee renewed interest when the series reaches its centennial in 2009. What do you think? Might be a good idea to delve into penny boxes more often!

I read recently in Numismatic News about how a small group of people were trying to corner the market for some early Lincoln cents. This is in preparation for the 100th anniversary of the Lincoln cent in 2009. We will have to see what happens when they go to sell their cents.

Happy Hunting,

I've been wondering what to do with all the old wheats I have. I knew they'd get spendy come 2009, and planned on selling them then. It'd be hard to imagine someone trying to corner the market on these though, there's too many of them out there. I guess it could be done, but it'd be tough.

Good to see the prices jumping up!

Its part of why I do so many pennies, figure in about 2-3 years wheaties are going to get more scarce due to an extra interest in pennies.

Nice!

Good thing I search bags for wheat cents. I saved all the good ones, 1909 S, many VDB's, 12 S in AU, 11 S, 11D's, many 13 S's

I have been buying key and semi key date Lincolns for about 2 years now. Some that I bought are almost double what I paid for them. I reccomend buying all that you can afford.
It is better to have one nice quality semi key Wheat than a bag of 2500 average wheats.

Mmmmm.....

I may have to dissagree with that. In an average 2500 piece bag of average wheats I end up finding on average 2 1909 VDB's, a 13 S, an 11 D, and many other better dates.

It all depends on wheather the bag is unsearched, and on which semi key date.

I am talking about investment grade coins. At least MS 60 or better. I have been wheeling and dealing Lincolns for a few years now and I dont even bother with the bags of cents any more. Many transactions to make a profit VS 1 sale with usually a much better profit.
This has been my experience anyway.

Oh, yes that is certainly true.

The last key I bought a month or so ago was a 1931 S in nice VF. Its value has gone up $30 already, and this was just for my collection.

The real bargain was a 1958 proof wheat (ultra cameo, but not graded) in a bargain bin for 25 cents. Looks like the one in your avatar.

The 1958 Proof lincoln in my picture is NGC graded pf 69 CAMEO. I paid $630.00.
Please keep in mind that I am a coin collector first and a "Treasure Hunter" second. I have only had my MD for 3 weeks now. Funny thing is I have found 5 Wheat cents so far and how I grin when I dig up a green crusty "for lack of better words" worthless wheat cent. I guess that what I am getting at is that it is ALL treasure to me, just some items more than others. I am not nocking the common dates as I have THOUSANDS of them.

Thats cool. I do both TH and CRH and Coin collecting. I have been a serious collector for about 2 years now, but I like TH alot too. Because im just turning 16 I can't really go out and buy 1958 NGC PF69 wheat cents. But I can search for them. The one I found probably is a proof 67 cameo. But then again it is not graded.

To me its just a lot of fun to buy coins and find them for a collection. You might like some of the unsearched coin lots you can get on EBAY. But do NOT buy from Suncoins, they ripped me off. Have you ever heard of "collectorsinternet.com"? I am hoping to order one of those in a month or so.

HH!

I have an ebay store. VERMONT COINS. I am realy careful about "unsearched" coin lot from anyone. The chances that a lot of coins unsearched is pretty slim in my opinion. To buy 2500 cents and get a small handful of keeper coins VS spending the same amount of money on a better coin is an easy decision for me.
I guess that I must say that my goals as far as coins are divided between collecting dates and mint marks and investment in my future.

Thats cool.

The good part is that I can buy a 2500 bag, search it, and sell it to my coin store and make a proffit.

I saw the jump last week at a visit to the coin shop. I bought quite a few wheats this year for myself and a couple friends, and I was shocked to see how much they have gone up.

I was getting '09-'19's mixed for 7 bucks a roll or something like that, should of bought more I guess.

And I thought that the 1931 S I bought 3 months ago in F for $80 was a bit pricy. Now its worth more that what I payed, even in good.
