This is Saturdays hunt.
We covered the whole of Bird Cover No.4 & scooped another 2 scrappies off the Wood Site before moving to another farm.
The area we were moving to was to do another Bird Cover, but after getting to the end of the track we noticed a field that looked empty of crop. Bonus we thought, even though it wasn't a target field & we had struck out in the pass, it was a welcome sight. Turns out it had a late Spring Bean crop that isn't showing yet, so gives us a week or so....
We scouted the whole field to set up where we would grid next time, & I did luck into a Roman Brooch.

2 Scrappies
Snake Buckle
Roman Oval Brooch (missing its stone)
Geo III Counterfeit Halfcrown (cut in half)
Victorian Gold Plated Brooch (made me think...)
Will III sliock Sixpence with Counter-stamped Star over RP.

Counterfeits must be fun to find I imagine...
Look forward to seeing what you can find in the "bonus" field...

Do you know where these snake buckles came from? More military related or civilian as well? I see them regularly turn up in UK and the States, but never continental.

They started in the UK in the 16th C for sword belts, fell out of fashion in the 17th C. Used in the 19th C & more commonly like this one at the start of the 20th C for Military & civilian. They are still being used in the Navy right up until today.

Ok, thanks. Something learned again. May be possible these early ones are just rare here and the later ones were not supported by the prussian military.

It's the 4th cut counterfeit halfcrown we have found on this farm. (never had any before). However, they were cut to take out of circulation & then chucked into the fields. This one was at least 3 fields away from the others, which is odd.

Interesting date range of finds as always Cru, at least you and your Dad found silver.
I always find it interesting when I dig jewelry in the middle of a farm field... why would someone wear a brooch into the fields?

As you mentioned, this piece looks to be late-19thc to me. :icon_scratch:

I think it more likely accidentally 'dumped' on the land. It was not near any foot paths & how likely would you be to be wearing that on a Country walk in the middle of no-where.
Yes, I think late 19th C, thought I had a chunk of solid gold for a second. Which if you follow us hardly ever happens with artefacts.
