Hello! Found this today in an antiques shop. Owner didn't know what it is. Appears to be made of brass plated pot metal, zinc, or pewter. Has two tabs on the bottom which allow the pieces to separate. About 2.5 inches tall, 3.5 inches wide. Racking my brains, looked on google, and I can't figure out what this thing is. Help would be greatly appreciated!

Something that goes over the mouth for anesthesia or inhalation?

Welp... I see this has still eluded.

I think PludNPlay may be on to something with that pic.

Yes I think its solved by PlugNPlay. Now we just got to find out what it is and/or where that photo came from.

Its the same principle with 2 spout looking pieces one inside the other, both finger latched, different opening (round and the OPs is oblong) but I think its the closest match.

Older version of a Gynecologist speculum tool?

Thanks Plug N Play! I know speculum has been mentioned earlier by a couple of members, and your photo backs up their theories. What a relief! I've been racking my brains for days (as have other members). I sure appreciate the time everyone has put in. Now I'm going to try and find what this particular medical device was used for. At least the hardest part of this mystery is over. Thanks again!

Wondering the same. I followed the link to Plug N Play's photo provided by Bigcypresshunter, and I noticed another photo of the bottom of the device has "HEWLETT & SON / LONDON" stamped on the back. I searched Hewlett & Son and found a veterinarian medical set made by them. I have searched specula on google, and I've yet to find an image similar to my device or the one in the photograph. Maybe it isn't a speculum, but we know it's some sort of surgical device thanks to Plug N Play's discovery. :icon_thumleft:

I still can't get past that there is a lot of "curve" for it to be a human speculum.
I've been searching surgical spreaders and the like.

I agree. My thought was it may not be a speculum that needs to go deep into the body. Maybe it goes into a shallow orifice, such as an abdominal incision. I DID CONTACT A PHYSICIAN THAT COLLECTS ANTIQUE MEDICAL INSTRUMENTS, AND HE SAID IT WAS DEFINITELY NOT A MEDICAL DEVICE. My only hangup with that is the photo Plug N Play provided. That device is stamped HEWLETT & SON, and I've found a couple examples of veterinary instruments made by this company.
