My friendly farmer had given me a field to detect in the next village, but due to the snow cancelling a shoot on another farm I won't be able to detect it for a few more weeks. In compensation he has let me go on my fave field for a while. This is the first time my farmer has let me detect on growing crops, and a kind of an honour :icon_thumleft:. Trouble is, it was bitterly cold today (minus 1c) and after a short while my fingers were killing me, tomorrow I will take my shooters mitts :laughing7:. I didn't find too much in the short time I was out there, 4 coins, a thimble, some buttons (one is a fox face livery), a pistol ball, a lead seal of some sort and a gold plated brass wedding band. So far I have only cleaned the wedding band, I will clean the other items tomorrow.
I did get one very interesting hit with the detector on the way back, a strong mid tone in both directions. When I dug down about 9 or 10 inches I saw a metal lid of some sort, it was an intact white glass jar. The lid has got "Pond's" written on it, and it was sitting in the hole as if someone had placed it there. I will take a better picture tomorrow in daylight. I haven't opened it yet, should I?. Anyway enjoy the pics.

It doesn't rattle and it's quite heavy for it's size, so it probably is just hand cream. It was just strange to see it sitting there like that. I would have taken a picture but my hands were hurting and covered in wet mud :tongue3:.

Just saw a new farmer (1 year ish) last night to show our latest stuff. He was so keen he said get on the Wheat fields (now 3-4inches) & dig away. So we will take up his offer :icon_thumright:

Wheat is pretty hardy & they often walk over it for the shoots, we put back the diggings & therefore little harm done- different with other crops (of course).

Its not that cold, you should do at least 4 hours :P Man up :hello:

Hi mate :hello:, my thoughts too when it came out of the ground, but when I cleaned it I saw "18 CT GOLD PATn" stamped on the inside. I'm going to get a pair of seal skinze, I have heard they are good and youv'e now confirmed it :icon_thumleft:.

I think some of the finds that have made it into the news recently have changed a few farmers minds. I aim to do 4 hours tomorrow on the church end of the field, there is a good mix there from celtic all the way through to Victorian, and the field is pancake flat and lovely to dig. The only problem is how close to the coast it is and the northerly wind, I'll just have to wear an extra vest :laughing9:.

Thanks Mike :icon_thumleft:, it certainly was a bit chilly :laughing7:. I've cleaned the coins now, the big one is still blank but the two smaller ones are George 2nd 1754 and George 4th 18 something farthings, so I'm quite pleased ;D.

Hi Ian.

I was wondering if you could help me with something I dug yesterday. It was dug in the forest, far from any modern homes and where the British were living over 200 years ago. There are some things you find that just feel old. Do you know any thing about it?

Thank you friend,

Mike
